About
Lost Property Office 2017 dir. Daniel Agdag (9:45 mins)
"Edward Hopper is a meticulous and thorough custodian of a large city transit’s Lost Property Office. In many ways you could describe him as lost at the items he is tasked to look after. Alone, in the basement office, he’s kept company by a tiny toy robot and an old gramophone, both of which he has lovingly restored after finding them lost and broken at train stations. It also becomes clear he has been made redundant and by no means because of the lack of his fastidious efforts - it just seems nobody visits the Lost Property Office much anymore. As the end of the day approaches and the sun begins to dip, so too does Ed’s mood and demeanor. But rather than abandon his beloved Lost Property Office and all its forgotten relics he has cared for, he decides to re-appropriate them. What emerges from the darkened basement is wondrous and whimsical." Daniel Agdag
Underground 2007 dir. Audrey Lam (4:15 mins)
"Moira falls down the rabbit hole of a railway station stairwell. She enters a frantic underworld that is deliriously cracking open and coming apart. The technique of stop-motion photo-collage creates a fragmented and erratic canvas for the film, as bits of paper add to and give way to one another." Audrey Lam
Writer’s Block 1995 dir. Leon Cmielewski (5:27 mins)
"Writer's block can be terminal; a combination of live action and model animation; "best animation", 1995 Melbourne International Film Festival." National Film and Sound Archive, Canberra
Episodes in Disbelief 2000 dir. Ann Shenfield (7 mins)
"Is it possible to know if a seed discovered after a thousand years is that of a now vanished magnolia or instead that of a virulent presently extinct weed? A film which explores childhood speculations on various issues such as time and space, sight and sightlessness, trauma and hope." Screen Australia
Unravelling 2001 dir Ann Shenfield (6 mins)
"What happens when a woman no longer feels she fits in? Is she on the verge of a breakdown, has she lost her mind? Or is a world full of possibilities opening before her? A metaphoric journey through breakdown." Screen Australia
The Moment 2010 dir. Troy Bellchambers, Shane McNeil (13:17 mins)
"Combining thousands of still images set within digitally created environments, The Moment tells the story of an old man torn from his slumber by a horrible and unshakable vision. Exploring themes of memory, guilt and identity, The Moment chronicles the inner narrative of an octogenarian struggling with Alzheimer’s Disease and a nagging belief that he may have killed his wife.
The Moment is an adaptation of a short story originally written by award-winning comedian Shaun Micallef. Starring Ralph Cotterill and Barbara West, the film premiered in March 2011 at the Bigpond Adelaide Film Festival." Troy Bellchambers, Shane McNeil
Pa 2001 dir. Neil Goodridge (6 mins)
"A seven-year-old boy's fantasy about the relationship he might have had with his grandfather, had they met." Screen Australia
Uncle 1996 dir. Adam Elliot (6 mins)
"The biography of a humble man, his lemon tree, chihuahua and crumpets. Uncle is brought to life in claymation and is Adam Elliot’s debut at what has become his signature technique. It is part one of a trilogy of claymation portraits, followed by Cousin (1998) and Brother (1999). The animator-director drew on the lives of his family for inspiration and the portrayals of these characters are endearing in their eccentricities, flawed and very human." Antoinette Starkiewicz
Lovely Day 1996 dir. Chris Backhouse (3:37 mins)
“An oil painting animation. A woman sings 'It's a Lovely Day Today' whilst accompanying herself on piano. Objects and creatures evolve around her as the song progresses.” National Film and Sound Archive, Canberra
