Director Tobe Hooper and producer/co-writer Steven Spielberg created one of the most iconic slices of '80s horror with the spine-tingling Poltergeist. After Steven and Diane Freeling (Craig T Nelson and JoBeth Williams) move into their new dream home with their three children, they discover that the house is beset by malevolent spirits determined to torment them. Enlisting assistance from parapsychologists and spiritual mediums, the Freelings must fight to free the house of its horrifying curse. The film combines Hooper's talent for conjuring abject horror with Spielberg's skiful exploration of the family unit to maximum effect, resulting in a spook-em-up that is both grounded and frighteningly other-worldly.
