About
Jane Campion would become only the third woman to win the Best Director Academy Award for her work directing this simmering neo-Western. Set in 1925 Montana, it is a study of the severe Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) who resents his brother George (Jesse Plemons) for marrying Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and bringing her teenage son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) into their lives on the ranch. His cruel demeanour grows more sinister as he takes Peter under his wing and the nature of their relationship becomes increasingly opaque. A gripping psychological study captured by Australian cinematographer Ari Wegner and scored by Jonny Greenwood, both of whom received Academy Award nominations for their work on the film.
