About
You and Me will screen from an imported 35mm print.
Successful neurosurgeon Pyotr is suffering from a mid-life crisis. He abandons his wife Katya and friend Sasha to take up a posting in Sweden, only to realise that this new role does not provide the spiritual satisfaction that he craves and he must return to his roots. The similarly listless Katya flirts with the idea of an affair with Sasha, all while trying to find a way out of her own personal doldrums.
Co-written with Gennady Shpalikov (the celebrated screenwriter of Soviet classic I Am Twenty 1964 and director of A Long Happy Life 1966), You and Me is a fragmentary take on existential enervation. A departure from Shepitko’s usual austere monochromatic aesthetic, the film is shot in glorious Technicolor – bringing a visual vibrancy to this absorbing character study.
